Inhouse Laboratory

Corry & O’Hare Vets have invested very heavily in a top of the range, in house veterinary laboratory.  As an independent practice, we are not tied to specific laboratories, allowing us to choose what we feel is the best!

This allows us access to rapid diagnostics which means your sick pet can receive treatment as soon as possible.

Idexx Catalyst

Allows us rapid analysis of biochemical parameters which allow instant diagnosis of conditions such as renal failure, liver problems and diabetes amongst a host of other conditions.  Catalyst also allows us to check electrolyte levels which can be life-saving in critical illness cases.  For routine testing, we are able to check progesterone levels for breeding dogs as well as fast results for thyroid and phenobarbital monitoring.  Whilst we can check inhouse cortisol levels for Cushings disease, current recommendations for monitoring suggest that external laboratory testing is still gold standard.  Gold standard is what we strive for.

Idexx Procyte Dx

Not all blood machines are equal, and this has never been more true than when it comes to haematology analysers.  Procyte Dx allows us to check the levels of red and white blood cells within the body.  The different levels of each type of blood cell give us a huge advantage when making a diagnosis.  Most haematology analysers will only differentiate between levels of red and white blood cells, meaning an abnormal result requires a further blood draw for confirmation from an external lab. Procyte DX is first and only in-house haematology analyser that combines three cutting-edge technologies for accurate results in just two minutes and offers a differential count of 5 different blood cell types.  This means it is rare for us to require further testing, unlike other inhouse laboratory providers.  Corry & O’Hare Vets are proud to be the only local practice to have Procyte Dx as our inhouse haematology analyser.

Inhouse Cytology

All of our skin and ear cases have an inhouse cytology performed routinely as part of our skin consultation.  Whilst most practices will only offer this then charge you separately if you give consent. We feel that we can’t treat the condition properly without checking first so we won’t give you an option BUT we will do this on the house.  Cytology gives us an indication of the infectious agents involved in your pets ear infection and tells us if we need to follow up with a bacterial culture.  Further testing may tell us what the best treatment is for your pets condition.

Cytology of lumps or bumps can sometimes rule out the possibility of cancerous change without surgery.  What’s more important is that it can tell us if growths need removed to prevent cancer spread.

Urinalysis

Our inhouse urinalysis allows us to check instantly for changes associated with urinary tract infection or diabetes.  We can also check for crystals which are common causes of cystitis in cats and dogs.  Urinalysis is also essential for the diagnosis of renal failure, all of which we can check inhouse.

External laboratory

We work closely with the renowned Idexx veterinary laboratory with world leading specialists in pathology and internal medicine.  This allows us fast and accurate access to diagnostics such as histopathology for biopsies and microbiological analysis for infectious problems.  Results are delivered and attached electronically to your account meaning you get your pets results as rapidly as possible.
